No Nut November (NNN)
An annual internet challenge, played mostly as a joke, in which people announce a month of self-discipline every November and then trade memes about whether they survived.
No Nut November is best understood as an internet running joke about self-discipline. Participants announce that they are taking on a month-long personal challenge, and much of the humor comes from the shared expectation that few people will actually make it to the end. Because it always falls in November, it is one of the web's most predictable seasonal trends: posts and memes about enduring the month appear every autumn and fade afterwards. Wikipedia's summary of coverage notes that outlets such as the New Zealand Herald and Men's Health reported on it as a popular online challenge, while others criticised it, including over its adoption by political influencers. This entry covers it as a meme and seasonal trend only.
History
According to Wikipedia, the term appeared in an Urban Dictionary entry published in 2011 and was originally meant as satire. It stayed a niche in-joke until around 2017, when it spread widely on social media. The subreddit r/NoNutNovember grew from about 16,500 subscribers in November 2018 to about 52,000 a year later.
