While They're Out Partying
A third-person twist on the classic "While you were partying, I studied the blade" format, used to salute anyone who stayed in to study, build, code or master an obscure skill.
The format sets a night out against a solitary, intense pursuit. The original joke is a mock-serious boast, "While you were partying, I studied the blade," usually next to a grave photo of someone holding a katana. The 'While They're Out Partying' version flips the point of view: instead of the loner bragging, a caption tips its hat to anyone putting in quiet work while everyone else socialises, whether that is studying the blade, coding a SaaS product, or learning an obscure skill. Used sincerely it is a motivational post; used ironically it pokes fun at over-the-top self-seriousness. Both readings are common, which is a big part of why the format has lasted.
History
The underlying meme is documented as a fill-in-the-blank snowclone, "While you were X, I studied the blade." Its earliest well-known form is an image macro of a man gripping a katana, posted to the subreddit r/justneckbeardthings on 26 January 2016, where it was received as a joke about people who give up social life for sword training. Variants followed through 2016, and in April 2017 the streamer Imaqtpie posted an Instagram photo captioned with a video-games version. This entry covers the third-person 'while they're out partying' wording as it is used today; the sources reviewed do not pin down when that exact wording first appeared.
