High-key / Low-key
'Low-key' means subtly, secretly, or to a moderate degree — you want it but won't admit it openly. 'High-key' means very much, obviously, or without reservation.
Definition
'Low-key' acts as an adverb meaning quietly, subtly, or to a restrained degree — 'I low-key love that song' means you like it but wouldn't necessarily broadcast it. It carries an undertone of mild embarrassment or wanting to keep something understated. 'High-key' is the opposite: openly, strongly, without reservation — 'I high-key want that right now.' Both terms function as intensity modifiers. 'Low-key' is used far more frequently and entered mainstream usage earlier. Both words are also standard music production terms (a key being low or high in pitch), but the internet usage is derived from the AAVE meaning of discretion vs. openness.
History
Roots in AAVE and Black American vernacular, where the terms described the level of discretion around information or behavior. 'Low-key' meaning 'keep it quiet' or 'don't make a big deal of this' was used in communities before the internet age. Twitter's Black community popularized both terms as adverbs in the early 2010s; by 2015–2016 they had crossed into mainstream usage. Merriam-Webster now includes 'low-key' as an adjective/adverb.
