Glow Up
A dramatic personal transformation — typically in appearance, confidence, or life circumstances — from a worse version of yourself to a noticeably better one.
Definition
To 'glow up' is to undergo a visible, positive transformation — most commonly in appearance (losing weight, improving style, better skincare) but also in confidence, career, or life quality. 'She really glowed up' acknowledges a meaningful change for the better since some earlier point in time. The 'glow up challenge' format involves side-by-side 'before and after' comparisons. The term is applied to people, but also to brands, cities, movies, and anything that has improved over time.
History
Rooted in AAVE and Black American culture — 'glowing up' described a natural progression from an awkward phase into confidence and attractiveness. The phrase gained mainstream visibility through Lil' Kim's 1997 track and became firmly embedded in Black social media discourse on Tumblr and Twitter around 2013–2015. Instagram's 'glow up challenge' (side-by-side before/after photos) spread widely in 2015–2016, and the term entered mainstream usage across demographics. Merriam-Webster added it to the dictionary in 2020.

Editorial estimates of cultural weight — Current Popularity tracks how much people are posting about this now, not historical fame.
Current Popularity = how actively people are posting about this today. Influence = lasting footprint. Cringe = online reception. Brainrot = absurdist energy. How scoring works
